The Chronicle Herald is a broadsheet daily newspaper based in Halifax , Nova Scotia , Canada . It is also the largest newspaper company in Nova Scotia and has the highest circulation of any newspaper in the Atlantic provinces . The newspaper is independent and owned by the Dennis Family of Halifax. Its headquarters are at 2717 Joseph Howe Drive .

The newspaper was first published in 1874 under the name The Morning Herald . The newspaper quickly became the largest daily newspaper in Halifax. The Evening Mail, which was available in the afternoon, was also launched. The newspaper's main competitors were The Chronicle in the morning and The Star in the afternoon . In 1949 the two publishers merged and the Chronicle-Herald and Mail-Star were created . In 1998 a Sunday edition was launched with the name The Sunday Herald . In 2004 The Chronicle-Herald and Mail Star were merged from what is now The Chronicle Herald .
