Edward Roberts (designer)

Edward Roberts (born May 1, 1845 in Deptford Broadway , † August 4, 1933 in Woolwich ) was a British designer.

The son of John Roberts from Greenwich worked as an assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1860 and was transferred to the Nautical Almanac Office in 1864. Appointed secretary of the Tidal Committee in 1868, he was entrusted with the construction of the tide calculator designed by Lord Kelvin in the winter of 1872/73 . In 1872 the Royal Astronomical Society elected him a Fellow. He later played an important role in the design and construction of the universal tide calculator used by Indian at Colonial Government and the Admiralty Hydrographic Office. For this work he received the Imperial Service Order on his retirement in 1907.

He left his house at 7 Blessington Road to his son and moved in with his wife Louisa, née. Webb, to Park Lodge, Eltham and later to Broadstairs, Kent.
