Edward Young (Africa explorer)

Edward David Young (born October 23, 1831 , † November 4, 1896 in Hastings ) was an English explorer of Africa .

Young was an English naval officer and commanded the ship Pioneer on the Zambezi and Shire rivers under David Livingstone from 1862 to 1863 .

When Livingstone was missing in 1867, Young led a search expedition to Lake Nyassa .

After Livingstone's death, he went to Nyassa in a dismountable steamer on behalf of the Scottish Mission Society in 1875, founded the Livingstonia station on its banks, circumnavigated the entire lake and discovered the Livingstone Mountains .

In 1877 he returned to England. He wrote The Search after Livingstone (1868) and Nyassa: A Journal of Adventures While Exploring Lake Nyassa (1877).
