Eeva Maria Therman (born August 4, 1916 in Helsinki ; † June 11, 2004 there ) was a Finnish - American cytogeneticist . She became known through studies of the human X chromosome , the chromosome changes in malignant diseases and a standard work on human chromosomes .

Life

She graduated from the University of Helsinki in 1939 and received her doctorate in 1947 as Eeva Suomalainen. In her doctoral thesis, she dealt with the cytology of a white sausage group from the asparagus family. She worked as a research assistant at the State Horticultural Institute before becoming a lecturer at Helsinki University in 1950. Since then she has published consistently under the name Eeva Therman. She provided proof of identity in 1953 with an article in which she expanded the topic of her doctoral thesis.

A Fulbright scholarship brought her to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1958 . In 1959 she moved from the Botany Department to the Pathology and Medical Genetics Department headed by Klaus Pätau . In 1961, Eeva and Klaus married. In order to be able to continue working in this geneticist group, she remained employed as a postdoc until she was awarded the rank of Senior Scientist in 1972 . It was only when Klaus died in 1975 that the faculty granted her the position of full professor .

After retirement to Therman decided in 2002 to return to Finland. Back in Helsinki, she moved into an apartment next to her sister's. Eventually she had to accept a place in the nursing home.
