Efraín Herrera (born September 28, 1959 in Mexico City ), also known by the nickname El Cuchillo ( Spanish for the knife ), is a retired Mexican football player on the position of defender .
Life
society
Herrera made his debut in the Mexican Primera División on the first day of the 1978/79 season for Unión de Curtidores in a home game against CF Atlante . In the game played on September 6, 1978, his team was able to turn a 2-2 deficit into a 2-2 in the last ten minutes. His first (and for Curtidores only) goal in the top Mexican division, he scored on April 26, 1979 in the 4-5 defeat in the away game against Atlético Español . When the team from the weaving town was relegated to the second division in 1981 , Herrera moved to Atlas Guadalajara , where he was under contract for the next four years up to and including the 1984/85 season.
In 1985 Herrera went back to his hometown, where he first played for Club América until 1988 and for the following eight years for Club Necaxa . With both clubs he won the championship title twice: with the Américanistas in PRODE 85 and in the 1987/88 season and with the Necaxistas in the 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons.
1996/97 he was under contract with Deportivo Toluca and then he moved to the second division CF Pachuca , with whom he won the first round tournament of the 1997/98 season (Invierno 1997) and at the end of the season rose to the first division, where he still made eleven appearances for the Newcomer denied before retiring from playing at the age of 39 in late 1998.
Since then he has coached various clubs in the fourth-class Tercera Division .
National team
Between 1980 and 1991 Herrera played a total of twelve times for the Mexican national team. He made his debut on April 15, 1980 in a friendly against Guatemala, which "El Tri" won 4-2. He had to wait almost seven years until his second mission, because it only took place on January 17, 1987 against El Salvador (3-1). Herrera made his last international appearance in the game for third place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 1991 on July 7, 1991 against Costa Rica (2-0).
