The lido

The Egelsee is a protected moor lake surrounded by nature reserves and is located in the municipality of Bubikon in the Zurich Oberland .

Its drainage takes place via the «Schwarz» and Jona into Lake Zurich .

Emergence

During the Würme Ice Age around 12,000 years ago, the Rhine / Linth Glacier shaped the landscape in the Zurich Oberland. A side arm crawled up from Lake Zurich into the upper Glatt valley . When it melted back, it left behind many trough-shaped tubs with numerous small lakes, so-called dead ponds . Many of these lakes silted up , only a few remained, one of them is the Egelsee. Its surface originally measured 650,000 m² and its size has now shrunk to just 35,000 m².

In 1991 the lake and the surrounding moor were included in the list of raised and transitional moors of national importance with inventory number 110 and in 1994 as number 80 in the list of flat moors of national importance .

Lido

There is a lido on the eastern bank. Season is from the beginning of May to the end of September. The bathing establishment can be reached by public transport or by car.

Landscape path

Since 2001 a landscape path has started at Badi Egelsee, which leads extensively around the adjacent nature reserve. The tour is about 2 kilometers long and takes about an hour. Animals and plants are described on eight themed boards, the interactions between agriculture and nature conservation are shown and, in addition to the earlier use, the development of this moor area is described.
