The Egon is a 1703 m high stratovolcano in the east of the Indonesian island of Flores . The volcanic crater with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of 200 meters sometimes contains a crater lake . A second summit in the south with a height of 1671 m is formed by a lava dome . Solfataras are found in the crater area and on the southern slope of the volcano.
Reports of eruptions of the Egons are available for the years 1888 to 1892. An eruption in 1907 cannot be assigned with certainty to the Egon; the Lewotobi Lakilaki volcano may have been the eruption site. When the Egon erupted on January 29, 2004, a landslide occurred on the eastern slope; A column of smoke rose 750 meters above the summit. Up to 6,000 people from surrounding villages were temporarily evacuated. Further eruptions between July and September 2004 and February 2005 did not cause any significant damage.
The Egon last erupted in April 2008: on April 15, after a phreatic eruption, an ash cloud rose to a height of 5.7 kilometers, drifted westward and reached the city of Maumere, 25 kilometers away . 600 people from surrounding villages had to be evacuated. Small steam eruptions and earthquakes on the Egon had already occurred since April 4th.
The Jakarta Post reported increased volcanic activity on November 4, 2010. The number of earthquakes measured daily in the area of the crater rose from around four to up to ten a day. Residents on the slopes of Gunung Egon were instructed to stay away from the crater.
