location

The property is located at the confluence of Am Hülserhof and Neusser Straße, on the border between Lürrip and the northern district of Uedding .

architecture

The former air raid shelter belongs to the type of high-rise bunker with the character of a tower, which was built three times in Mönchengladbach and is most clearly preserved on Neusser Straße. It represents a type of building that was once built in preparation for World War II and the urgent need for civil defense . The former bunker is six storeys high , made of reinforced or reinforced concrete with bevelled corners , a high, hipped end with a massive cornice with a tooth cut . It was erected on a rectangular floor plan on a base area of approximately 16 × 17 m and a height of approximately 19 m. Immediately after the end of the war, the British stationed in Mönchengladbach blew up windows in the tower-like bunker so that it could be used as a home. Furthermore, the gas locks were removed and the street-side entrance walled up.

The bunker is important for human history, especially for the history of civil defense in Nazi-ruled Germany and for dealing with these buildings immediately after the end of the war by the British occupying forces. It is just as important for the history of the city of Mönchengladbach, especially for the location of Lürrip. This building with its defensive function ensured the survival of a large part of the Lürriper population and alleviated the enormous housing shortage in the post-war period. As a building type newly developed in the Third Reich , as a testimony to recent, painful history, the bunker Neusser Straße 374 is to be preserved and used as a monument according to § 2 DSchG NRW for scientific, architectural, social and local-historical reasons .
