Post office

The former post office at Poststrasse 5 in Eppstein is a listed cultural monument.

Postal history of Eppstein

Until 1866 there was no postal expedition in Eppstein. The Thurn-und-Taxis-Post supplied Eppstein irregularly by messenger from the Königstein post office. There was also a daily messenger from the Hattersheim post office.

In 1866 a postal expedition was created in Eppstein. This was located in a building by the choir of the talk church. This building was demolished in 1971. The mail expedition was supplied daily by the Hattersheim post office. Several neighboring towns were supplied from here. The first public telegraph was set up there in 1878 and the central telephone network in 1900, which initially had 9 subscribers.

The post office

In 1904 the imperial post office was built in a historicizing style in Eppstein. The building represented a significant urban counterpoint to the Catholic Parish Church of St. Laurentius , built in 1903 : It is in the line between the train station and the church. It is a two-storey plastered building on a high base. The structure and the hilted roof are structured in a variety of ways by risalits , balcony protrusions, bay windows with polygonal dome and the staircase extension. The entrance is laid out with arcades across the corner and forms a supporting romanized corner column. The walls of the mostly coupled windows and profiled cornices are made of sandstone. The gable in ornamental framework with curved struts is striking, the high frieze zone with the rows of long, decorated consoles is particularly characteristic.
