Marriage preparation protocol
The marriage preparation protocol (EPP) is the record for marriage preparation and marriage in the Catholic Church in Germany and is drawn up by the responsible pastor during a wedding interview . The basis is the resolution of the General Assembly of the German Bishops' Conference of September 24, 2002 on relevant "particular norms".
Purpose and content
The protocol summarizes all data and declarations that are important for marriage according to the marriage law of the Catholic Church . It queries and provides information on important topics of church teaching. This is to ensure that the bride and groom know the requirements that they have to fulfill in a marriage that is exemplary in canonical law. They must give their consent to the requirements for entering into a marriage and declare that they will not enter into the marriage under duress (cf. can. 1103). However, it does not address the fact that and how the bride and groom mutually administer the sacrament of marriage and how marriage can take place even in the absence of a priest.
Essentially, it is queried and recorded whether the bride and groom are free to marry according to the teaching of the Catholic Church or whether there are any obstacles to marriage . In addition to these legal matters, it is also asked whether the bride and groom have been prepared for marriage . Enacted by the German Bishops' Conference, the marriage protocol formally ensures that all requirements of canon law are met. The protocol contains the documentation of the marriage preparation and the personal details of the bride and groom, then the answers of the bride and groom to the questions asked about understanding the marriage consensus. By pointing out possible applications and permits in cases where a dispensation is required, it refers to the variety of possible wedding forms and locations beyond the standards. The pastor signs the official notes. The "note table" in the appendix contains comprehensive explanations as footnotes to individual items in the protocol.
Form and structure
The protocol is bound to the official form of the German Bishops' Conference. By ticking, entry and signature, all data and details to be documented are recorded in a structured manner.
In the head of the form, the information on the bride and groom's course , wedding interview , bids , marriage and the variant chosen from the possible forms of worship are shown. The following are the sections:
- A. Personal details
- B. Obstacles to marriage, prohibitions to marry, prohibitions to marry and will to marry
- C. Request for dispensation, permission, nihil obstat
- D. Granting of dispensation, permission, Nihil obstat
- E. Official notes on marriage and registration
- Note board for the marriage preparation protocol of the German Bishops' Conference
Essential information and insurance of the bride and groom
The protocol provides information about previous marriages and their dissolution or declaration of nullity and makes it clear that the obligations towards relatives from an earlier marriage remain. In principle, even in a purely civil marriage, these are opposed to the new church marriage and make it illegal. Since in Germany "natural obligations" (maintenance) are mostly civilly settled, this will normally not lead to a delay in the upcoming marriage.
Through various, mostly suggestive questions to the bride and groom, the willingness to lead a marriage and family according to church teaching is queried. In Section III., No. 19 of the protocol, the bride and groom confirm the information they have provided with their signature.
The statements in note (6), last sentence, only apply to persons with soldier status and their families. Because only this group of people belongs to the jurisdiction of the military bishop of the Bundeswehr.
