Orlau Memorial Cemetery
At the memorial cemetery Orlau in Orłowo ( Orlau ) 1,430 war victims rest of the battle at Orlau that on 23 August 1914 as part of the Battle of Grunwald took place. 329 soldiers of the German army (57 unknown) and 1101 soldiers of the Russian army are buried here. The cemetery of honor consists of an enclosure wall made of boulders. The graves are bordered with curbs and marked with a pillow stone.
Battle at Orlau
On August 23, 1914, the 37th Infantry Division and the subsequent 70th Landwehr Brigade took up position over the heights of Michalken and Frankenau. This front line was in all its width from the Russian XV. Corps attacked. Weaker attacks were repulsed at Michalken and Frankenau, but losses resulted from the artillery fire. At Orlau the attack finally reached everyone until a counterattack drove the attacker back.
