Eichenschild is a German medieval rock band founded in 1998 . The model for the band name is the figure of the dwarf king Thorin Eichenschild from JRR Tolkien's work The Hobbit .

Band history

The members of Eichenschild played together in the school band in Bischofswerda and in the metal band Smokers Corner . The fascination for ancient culture with its myths and legends gave rise to the desire to take up these topics in music. The first songs were written in autumn 1998 and they were named after Tolkien's fictional character Thorin Eichenschild . Guitar, vocals, drums and bass were the first instruments. Bagpipes and flute followed later . Two long years with many rehearsals and few performances were to follow before the first “official” CD Mondscheinlegende , an in-house production, was released. Since the band members began their studies, there was little time for the further development of the band in the next few years. In December 2001, the second album was released, Auf Verdeih und Verderb . In 2002 bassist Martin Hanisch began his studies and was no longer able to participate in Eichenschild due to the location of the university. In 2005 the last album for the time being was released, Das Ende vom Lied . In the same year Hanisch found his way back to the band, but now on the rhythm guitar.

On December 22nd, 2007 Eichenschild's last concert took place in Neukirch . During the three hours of the concert, some songs were played that were previously only included on a demo . A live recording was to be made that evening, but this was not published due to various technical problems during the recording. The band wrote that they were taking a “creative break”.

Drummer Tony Ramenda now plays in the Chemnitz band Cafea Ticaya . Andre Petzold and Martin Hanisch have been forming the medieval folk duo Gebrüder Nonsens since 2005 , formerly known as Furunkulus Nonsens .

On April 30, 2011, Eichenschild gave another concert after an absence of almost four years, which took place in the Neukirch youth center. Eichenschild also played a few concerts in 2012, but without Ramenda and Hanisch, who are otherwise active in music groups.

style

Eichenschild combines modern instruments with bagpipes, flutes, shawms and hurdy-gurdy .
