Lizard collar

The Lizard League was an amalgamation of the knighthood in the Kulmer Land at the time of the Teutonic Order . The purpose of the alliance, founded in Rehden in 1397 , was protection and mutual assistance against the rule of the Teutonic Order and against the big cities.

The union was founded by Nicolaus and Johannes von Renys and their nephews Friedrich and Nikolaus von Kynthenow . The name- giving symbol was the lizard , which has also been handed down in the seals of individual members of the Federation.

In 1410, the Lizard Association refused allegiance to the Teutonic Order in the Battle of Tannenberg ; this was of decisive importance for the defeat of the order army.

Later the Bund was temporarily banned by Grand Master Heinrich von Plauen .

In 1440 Knights of the Lizard Association joined the Prussian Confederation and supported it in the conflict with the Teutonic Order.
