Federal popular initiative "6 weeks vacation for everyone"

The federal popular initiative “6 weeks vacation for everyone” was rejected on March 11, 2012 by 66.5 percent of the voters. The aim of the initiative was to increase the length of the minimum vacation time from a minimum of 4 weeks to 6 weeks.

History of origin

The “6 weeks vacation for everyone” initiative was launched by Travail.Suisse , which justified its plan with a better balance between workload and relaxation.

On March 11, 2012, a referendum took place in Switzerland , which was initiated by the “6 weeks vacation for everyone” initiative. With a “no” vote of 66.5% and a “yes” vote of 33.5%, this initiative clearly failed.

Positions

The initiative met with particularly strong resistance from the Swiss Employers' Association (SAV), the economic umbrella organization Economiesuisse and the Swiss government itself. Among other things, it was feared that an increase in the minimum vacation would lead to significant job losses and financial damage running into billions.
