Bursa tendinis calcanei

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bursa tendinis calcanei (in veterinary anatomy as Bursa subtendinea calcanea musculi flexoris superficial digital referred to) is a bursa between the heel bone and the Achilles tendon . In addition to these two structures, it is also bounded by a body of fat lying in front of the Achilles tendon. The ventral part is lined by fiber cartilage, the rest of the wall, as with all bursa, by a synovial membrane ( membrana synovialis ). The human calcaneal bursa contains about 1 to 1.5 ml of fluid. The dorsiflexion in the ankle leads to an increase in pressure in the bursa, while the opposite movement causes a reduction in pressure.

An inflammation of the bursa ( bursitis tendinis calcanei ) may occur in connection with the Achilles tendon irritation. Misalignments such as a varus position of the heel or a hollow foot promote the occurrence of bursitis. In veterinary medicine, bursitis is also known as " egg gall ".
