Aptitude test

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aptitude tests are one of several methods for determining whether and to what extent a person has the necessary prerequisites to meet the entry requirements of an educational path (e.g. transfer to a higher school) to carry out an activity (e.g. aptitude for management functions ) or benefit from a further training measure (e.g. a computer science course). They also serve to put people in a sequence according to their suitability ("competitive ranking process") in order to enable a selection (e.g. capacity-based admission based on suitability for medical studies ).

Test forms

Aptitude tests are subordinate to an aptitude diagnostic strategy . First of all, the requirements of the chosen profession, activity or measure are determined in order to be able to be successful (e.g. successfully completing a course of studies or having appropriate management skills). Aptitude tests are then a way of determining the corresponding potentials of a person that are relevant to the chances of success. Accordingly, there are various test methods that can be used as aptitude tests, e.g. B. Determine attitudes , personality traits , knowledge , abilities , skills , etc.

Aptitude tests are psychological tests that are suitable for answering these questions. Choosing the right test is just as important as adding other methods that may be necessary (analysis of documents such as application documents or résumés, application, recruitment or aptitude interviews , observation and assessment of behavior in the context of assessment centers ).

Possible uses

They can be used in a counseling situation (a person would like to know for themselves whether they are suitable or what needs to be done to meet certain requirements). More often, however, it is used in a selection or selection situation where the most suitable are to be selected from a number of applicants (study admission with numerus clausus , filling of positions with the most suitable applicants).

Quality criteria

The quality requirements for qualification-related diagnostic tests are in the DIN - standard DIN 33430 regulated. In practice, however, many procedures that do not meet the scientific quality criteria are still being used by unskilled persons. In the DIN standard, the minimum requirements are presented in such a way that clients of aptitude diagnostics (e.g. companies) can assess the quality. However, the implementation and enforceability of this standard is still controversial.

Since aptitude tests are increasingly used today, there is a veritable flood of auxiliary literature and guides. Whether and to what extent these test trainers and advisors contribute to the success of an application is controversial, although the providers promise a high success rate.
