An American nightmare

An American Nightmare (Original Title: The Cold Six Thousand ) is a novel by James Ellroy from 2001 and the (seamlessly following) sequel to An American Thriller .

action

The novel starts after the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy and closes with the attacks on the civil rights activist Martin Luther King and the politician Robert F. Kennedy . The story is told from the perspective of some insiders who, through their involvement in criminal activities from the Mafia to the CIA, from party politics to the Vietnam War and drug trafficking, have insights into the motives and backgrounds of possible instigators and perpetrators of these attacks. The main characters are the crude Pete and the greasy lawyer Ward (both already appear in An American Thriller ). But Ellroy also introduces a few new characters. And so, complicated conspiracies are devised, people are killed, mind-altering substances are ingested, people are pressured and tortured. And Mr. Hoover overlooks the gruesome scenery and pulls the strings in the background.

style

The expression of the novel became (compared to the first part) a little faster and stronger. The text consists almost exclusively of subject - predicate - object sentences.
