An honorable house is a socio-critical song composed and interpreted by the Austrian singer Udo Jürgens from 1975 to a text by Michael Kunze . It was produced by Ralph Siegel . The song has been covered repeatedly, including a. 1977 by Gunter Gabriel and 2009 by Dieter Thomas Kuhn and band.

The text deals with a house community that wants to banish a couple living in a “ wild marriage ” - that is, without a marriage license - from the house. This was not legally permissible because only until 1927 the renting of apartments to unmarried couples was forbidden under Section 180 of the Criminal Code as a pairing . From verse to verse it becomes clear that the couple's neighborhood is also behaving immorally in various ways.

The song was released on April 14, 1975 by Ariola in Germany as a single from his album Meine Lieder . It took 3 minutes and 28 seconds on the record. In Germany the song reached number 15 and was represented in the sales hit parade for a total of 16 weeks. In Switzerland, it placed second and stayed in the top seller for a total of 10 weeks.

In 2014 the song by Uli Scherbel and Gianni Meurer was covered on the occasion of Udo Jürgens' 80th birthday; in this version he no longer deals with an unmarried couple, but with a homosexual couple.
