Excavations at Ein el-Jarba

Ein el-Jarba is an Israeli site from the early Copper Age of the Wadi Rabah culture , which dates back to the 6th millennium BC. Is dated.

Geographical location

The site is located at the foot of the Menasche ridges in today's Kibbutz Hasorea in the Jezreel plain , the main connection between the Mediterranean and the Jordan Valley , around 20 km southeast of the modern city of Haifa and is being explored as part of an excavation project by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

Research history

Several excavations have already been carried out in the vicinity of Ein el-Jarbas. After the discovery of archaeologically relevant material during dredging work, the first excavation campaign took place in 1966 under the direction of Jacob Kaplan.

The excavated area covered around 65 square meters and resulted in four phases of Chalcolithic use with remains of walls and burials. In 1979, remnants of the early Chalcolithic wall were uncovered about 75 m west of this area under the direction of E. Meyerhof.

Other sites from the sixth millennium BC In the immediate vicinity are for example Tell Qiri, Hasorea , Tell Zeriq, Abu Zureiq and Mishmar HaEmek stratum V.

Excavations since 2013

Since 2013 Ein el-Jarba has been researched by the Archaeological Institute of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the direction of Katharina Streit. Two settlement episodes from the Early Bronze Age IB (4th millennium BC) and the Early Chalcolithic (6th millennium BC) were discovered. The early Bronze Age settlement consists of oval houses with floors, pits and a grain silo. In the early Chalcolithic phase, several floors and remains of unfired adobe bricks and a round stone installation were found.
