The Vorwerk of the Einersheimer Tor

The Einersheimer Tor is one of the medieval city gates of Iphofen . It is in the east of the Lower Franconian city.

History and architecture

The city wall of Iphofens dates back to 1293. The Einersheimer Tor was explicitly mentioned in 1422 in the council minutes. In 1451 the gate was repaired. The 16th century brought further changes: the Vorwerk was joined by Steinmetz Caspar Red Felser by a bridge and walls with the main tower. In 1525, during the German Peasants' War , marauding peasants failed in their attempt to take Iphofen.

The Vorwerk has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. It was scaled down and lost its crenellated reinforcement on the top. Today the gate and the forecourt consist of square towers with an ogival passage. The Vorwerk has corner oriel turrets . A machicolation is attached to the city side. Inside, a stone cross commemorates the murder of an Iphöfer by the Swedes in 1632. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation registers the Einersheimer Tor under the number D-6-75-139-73.
