In machining technology, intervention is a non-standardized technical term. When a cutting tool has such contact with the workpiece that chips are separated from it, the tool is in engagement. The expression occurs among other things in the definition of the service life . Only the time in which the tool is in operation is taken into account, while workpiece change times or the times for adjusting the tool as well as the times during the movement of the tool to the processing point (without cutting off chips) are not counted.

With automatic lathes, for example, at least three tools can be brought into engagement at the same time, so they separate chips from the workpiece in parallel. On the other hand, machining with three tools at the same time already exists when several tools move simultaneously in the work area of ​​the machine tool , even if none of them separates chips.

The term “intervention” also occurs in a number of standardized technical terms: intervention variables are, for example, sizes that the machine operator can set on the machine and influence the thickness of the separated layer, including the working intervention a e .
