Life

Study and job

Renesse was born in 1850 as the son of a landowner in the Kannen house in Amelsbüren. In 1868 he made his school leaving certificate in Münster. He then studied theology at the Georg August University of Göttingen , where he became a member of the Göttingen Wingolf , which had been founded a year earlier in 1869 . As a one-year volunteer, he took part in the Franco-German War from 1870 to 1871 . From 1875 to 1876 he was a teacher at the Realschule I. order in Steinfurt and in 1877 at the municipal middle school in Ohligs . Later, from 1877 to 1894, he became a senior teacher at the municipal Ev. Gymnasium in Lauban, and from 1894 at the Royal Gymnasium in Oels . Renesse retired in 1916.

Translation of the Didache

Renesse became known in 1891 for his translation of the Didache, which he published under the title The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles in Giessen. The editions of 1891, 1892 and 1897 became a standard German translation of the Didache. B. Max Weber also worked. The teaching of the Twelve Apostles is divided into three parts: 1. Text, translation, notes, 2. Discussions about the purpose and content of the Didache and 3. Investigations into authenticity, sources, time and place of origin, as well as the processing of the Didache in later writings. The third part could only be found in the third edition in 1897.
