Use in the theater

In the theater , a keyword ( appearance or cue ) is used to show other actors, singers, extras as well as sound, light and stage technicians the time of their deployment. The keyword is usually a fixed place in the text or in the piano reduction of the piece being performed. It is usually given by the stage manager .

Use in music

In jazz , certain parts of a piece of music, which should have variable lengths, are played “on cue” - for example at the end of a solo or the final part after a number of runs.

The start or cue is usually given by the conductor or band leader , possibly also by the soloist shortly before or at the end of his solo. An operation can be given both acoustically (e.g. certain tone sequence) and visually (conductor, hand signals).
