Mission photography refers to reportage photography during operations by emergency organizations . People who practice this type of photography are called field photographers .

Since operational photography also means being close to potentially dangerous situations, operational photographers must have special knowledge and skills with regard to emergency and operational scenarios, health and safety measures. Mission photographers usually have to wear the same protective clothing as the fire fighters.

The International Organization of Fire Photography coordinates and certifies thousands of operational photographers worldwide. The content of this certification confirms the scope of further training, skills and knowledge in the areas of health, safety, fire-fighting operations, etc., in order to act at an appropriate safety distance on site.
