The hermitage Sankt Verena is one of the hermitages consecrated to Saint Verena in the Verena Gorge near Solothurn , in the area of ​​the municipality of Rüttenen .

history

One of the two chapels dates in part from the 12th century , making it the second oldest building in Solothurn. 1442 is the first time ze sant Frenen the residence of a hermit witnessed. At the end of the 18th century , the gorge, similar to the Hermitage of Arlesheim near Basel and the Sanspareil rock garden in Upper Franconia (Germany), was designed into a landscape garden of the romantic style phase and a popular local recreation destination. The French diplomat Louis Auguste Le Tonnelier de Breteuil was primarily responsible for this .

In the 19th century, numerous plaques and memorial stones were placed there in memory of famous Solothurn personalities, which gave it the character of an "open-air hall of fame". In addition to Breteuil, these personalities include the geologist Amanz Gressly .

The hermit's livelihood is financed by the Solothurn community, following centuries of custom. In 2014 this amounted to CHF 2,000 a month. With Sr. Verena Dubacher, a hermit lived in the hermitage for the first time since 2009 . Her predecessor was Br. Johannes Leutenegger. Her successor from mid-2014 to early 2016 was Sr. Benedikta Sigel. On September 26, 2016 Michael Daum was elected as the new hermit.
