The Hermitage of St. Luc (also Ecclesia Pudido Retundo ) is a monastery building in the Pyréenés Orientales department . It is 204 m above sea level near the municipality of Passa .

History and historical significance

The Hermitage was first mentioned in 1031. The monastery chapel also served as a place of worship for the residents in the vicinity of Passa. In 1368, under the Christian name "Capela de Sent Luc de Pug Redon", the hermitage was next mentioned. At this time it is gradually, if only temporarily, abandoned in favor of the Passover Church.

With the general spread of the hermit system in the 17th century, the former Christian hermits gave way in isolation to the secularly motivated hermits of Catalan society. The citizens of the surrounding towns seeking advice saw them as a point of contact. Increasingly, in the 17th century, Klausen and hermitages were built that were also accessible to outsiders. In the course of this, the St. Luc hermitage was restored and supplemented by additional buildings that served the hermits as homes.

The hermitage was dissolved in the French Revolution .

In 1794, in the course of the Franco-Spanish war, all southern areas of the county of Roussillon were taken by the Spanish troops and the hermitage was temporarily given up. In 1793, during the 2nd Battle of Le Boulou , General Perignons found shelter with 5000 men in the Hermitage St. Luc and attacked the Spanish soldiers led by General Ricardo from an ambush until they withdrew. This prevented, among other things, the occupation of the nearby city of Perpignan by the Spanish regiments. According to an inventory made in 1826, the monastery chapel was destroyed, but was restored in 1842. In 1930 the actual hermitage, the former home of the hermits, was destroyed. Eighteen years later, the entire building was renovated, it is still intact and is considered an important part of the cultural-historical and religious heritage by both the Pyrénées-Orientales department and the municipality of Passa.
