The hermit caves of Sabariz ( Portuguese as covas eremíticas de Sabariz ) are located about six kilometers southeast of the city of Viana do Castelo near the settlement of Vila Fria in the northern region of Portugal .

The early medieval grouping of cells carved into the rock, discovered in 1978, is located in a heavily overgrown forest area in the hinterland of the mouth of the Rio Lima . It is unclear whether the first hermit caves discovered in Portugal date back to the Visigothic period or rather to the early Reconquista period.

The hermit caves of Sabariz are three groups of niches and rooms arranged in parallel. The combination of a large side niche and a small terminal room with rounded, but almost rectangular floor plans is available three times. In addition, two of the groups have smaller apsidal niches. Just like the fourth cavity, which consists of a single room and is inclined to it, they all start from the large common anteroom. The entire complex is only about 150 square meters.
