Population development in Hoyerswerda. Above from 1632 to 2017. Below an excerpt from 1871

The population of Hoyerswerda rose only slowly in the Middle Ages and early modern times . Due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famines, it kept falling. Until the middle of the 20th century, only a few thousand people lived in the city. After the construction of the lignite refining plant (combine) Schwarze Pump in 1955, population growth accelerated rapidly. The population rose from around 9,000 to its historic high of 71,124 in 1981. In the meantime, however, the population has fallen sharply again.

On December 31, 2008, the “ official population ” of Hoyerswerda was 39,214 according to the state statistical office of the Free State of Saxony (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices). Since the fall of the Wall in the GDR - in 1988 the city still had 69,361 inhabitants - Hoyerswerda lost 43.5 percent of its residents due to high unemployment and the decline in the birth rate, and since 1981 even 44.9 percent. Estimates by the State Statistical Office assume that the population will decrease further to around 29,000 in 2020. The city administration is already forecasting the same number for 2015.

The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1825 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the State Central Administration for Statistics (until 1989) and the State Statistical Office (from 1990). From 1840 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1990 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1840, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.

Population development

In the years 1993 to 1998 the urban area was enlarged by incorporations (1993 Bröthen-Michalken, 1994 Knappenrode, 1996 Schwarzkollm and Zeißig, 1998 Dörgenhausen). Nevertheless, the population of the city as a whole fell by 36.1 percent between 1988 and 2003 (25,021 people). The population losses are particularly strong in Neustadt. There the population decreased by 48.8 percent. To reduce the vacancy rate, numerous prefabricated buildings have been demolished since 1999. The decline in the number of inhabitants in the old town between 1988 and 2003 was 10.6 percent. The population of the five incorporated villages, on the other hand, rose between 1991 and 2003 by 41.8 percent (1,450 people).
