Overview

Until the end of the 19th century, Waldenburg was a small town and had 13,553 inhabitants in 1890. With the industrialization of the Waldenburg area, the town grew into a medium-sized town at the beginning of the 20th century and the population rose to over 60,000 in the 1930s.

At the end of the Second World War, Waldenburg was placed under Polish administration and the systematic expulsion of the German population and the settlement of Polish settlers began. In addition, many Jews were settled in Wałbrzych and other cities in Lower Silesia immediately after the war, in 1947 there were 9,600, and shortly afterwards around 5,000 who initially settled in the city. Only in the mid-1950s did the number of Jews decrease again. Since the German population was needed for industry and mining, part of the Germans were held back in the industrial area until the mid-1950s. This even had special privileges allowed, clubs start to perform German lessons and they had the opportunity to become citizens of the GDR. After that, most of the resettlement began, but a small number stayed there.

As an important industrial location, the city continued to grow rapidly after the Second World War, and in the 1950s the border to the big city was crossed. By the fall of the Berlin Wall, the population rose to around 140,000. Since then the population has been falling.
