Among single franking (EF) refers to the franking of a mail item with a postage stamp ( postal stamp or imprinted stamp ) in the value of required for the transport of postal charge. It is the most common postage.

The definitive stamps to be found in all countries are usually graded in their value levels in such a way that they can be used to frank the most frequent mail items, weight levels and distance zones individually. Definitive stamps are also often found with which the fee for a simple mail item plus frequently occurring additional services ( registered mail , express mail , etc.) can be compensated with a stamp. If several stamps are used on the mail item, one speaks of multiple franking .

Also special stamps or other types of marks (z. B. officials ) have usually worth steps, making use as single possible.

Postage-fair single frankings are popular with many collectors and often achieve higher sales prices than mixed frankings with the same brand. This applies in particular to those values that were mainly designed as additional values by the postal administrations and consequently were only rarely used as individual postage.
