Eis- Zwei -Geissebei is a carnival custom and children's festival at the town hall in the heart of the old town of Rapperswil , a village in the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

history

Since when the custom has been practiced on Shrove Tuesday can no longer be determined. The children's festival is said to go back to the siege and pillage of Rapperswil on February 24, 1350 by Rudolf Brun , when compassionate and probably wealthy townspeople are said to have served food from the windows of their houses to the hungry children of poor citizens.

procedure

While the members of the city council of Rapperswil (also since the merger of the two parts of the city) organize the traditional " gentlemen's dinner " in the town hall with guests of honor and a cabaret program, hundreds of children of all ages usually gather in front of the main square from 2 p.m., mostly with their parents the town hall to the " distributed ". Exactly at 3:15 p.m. according to the castle's " Zytturm " , the windows of the council chamber on the second floor open and a fanfare can be heard. When asked: “ Are alli mini Buebe doo? “, Comes the polyphonic answer:“ Joo! Ice cream - two - goats! “, And the council members throw Cervelats , Weggli and Biberli out of the room windows down to the children in the main square. Meanwhile, the councilors urge the children to repeat their calls for around half an hour with 'enticing' gestures and waving the sausages. The louder the call, the more treats the councilors throw to the children, sometimes very deliberately whole chains of sausages, large quantities of rolls ( Weggli ) and sweets, the so-called beavers , at the constant callers .

Another role is played by an oversized gingerbread , which is fastened to the roof ridge of the town hall by means of a rope winch and is slowly lowered and pulled up again until the most skilled of those gathered have torn it down in small and large pieces.

Finally, the local Guggenmusik ensembles hold a small monster concert on the main square, followed by a procession to the castle courtyard and performances during the evening in the restaurants in the old town.

Remarks

  1. Appenzell beavers are not a local specialty, they come from the Swiss canton of Appenzell .
  2. The origin of this partial aspect also seems unknown to local residents and will perhaps remain so, but could be a symbol for the eponymous “billy goat”, which could have been distributed among the needy citizens as meat allocation by the rich fellow citizens.
  3. Local dialect (vernacular) of the Swiss German language
