Eisboßeln (also Eisboseln or field combat ) is a sport in East Friesland and the Schleswig-Holstein marshland ( Dithmarschen , North Friesland ). The team sport is the origin of Boßeln / Klootschießen and its most traditional variant.
The aim is to throw the wooden ball, which weighs about 500 grams, as far as possible, whereby the rolling after hitting, the so-called trilling, on the often frozen ground is part of the distance. Two teams - traditionally these could be up to 101 people strong and make up almost all men in a village - alternately threw a route several kilometers long along paths and ditches. If a team is no longer able to catch up with the opponent, although they had one more throw, the opponent is assigned a bulkhead. The team with the most bulkheads won. The season traditionally runs from September to March.
Literarily the Eisboßeln in is Theodor Storms novella Der Schimmelreiter immortalized (1888). In this, Hauke Haien wins an important competition during his apprenticeship and thus beats the foreman Ole Peters in the fight for Elke.
