Federal Railways
Federal Railways ( EdB ) are the railways majority owned by the Federal Republic of Germany . Their status is regulated in Article 87e of the Basic Law.
Since the rail reform in 1994, these railways have been run as commercial enterprises under private law and are subject to federal administration. To the extent that their task includes the construction, maintenance and operation of railways , the majority of them must remain the property of the federal government. It is the responsibility of the federal government to ensure that the good of the general public is taken into account here and also through the transports offered. Expressly excluded from this are transports in local rail passenger transport , which is the responsibility of the federal states.
They are separated from all other railways, the non-federal railways (NE).
All federal railways currently belong to the Deutsche Bahn Group (DBAG). The required federal administration is carried out by the Federal Railway Authority (EBA).
