Skeiðarárjökul from Lómagnúpur towards Skaftafellsjökull |
The Skeiðarárjökull is a broad glacier of Vatnajökull in Iceland .
It is located in the municipality of Hornafjörður .
location
Most of it is located in the former Skaftafell National Park , now part of the Vatnajökull National Park in the south of the country.
Glacier runs
This glacier is feared because of its glacier courses. These are tidal waves resulting from eruptions in the Grímsvötn volcanic system . The last major glacier run so far followed a volcanic eruption in Gjálp in 1996 and washed away part of the Hringvegur in this area on the upstream plain of Skeiðarársandur .
Drains
The main outflows from this glacier are Skeiðará and Gígjukvísl .
