Alanís railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The railway accident in Alanís was the collision of two trains in the railway station of Alanís , even Alanís de la Sierra , in the province of Seville , Spain , on November 19, 1937. At least 56 people died.

accident

Civil war had raged in Spain since July 1936 . Train No. 5759, a mixed train that carried military equipment, was in an overhaul track at Alanís de la Sierra station on the single- track Zafra - Los Rosales line . Train No. 5760 was also a mixed train and was on the way from Mérida to Seville . He transported military equipment, but also prisoners of war republicans to a concentration camp , probably at the construction sites of the Canal del Viar , i.e. those of La Algaba or Guillena . Most of the prisoners were Basques .

The 5760 train drove onto the 5759 train. The sources give no reason for this.

consequences

At least 56 people died in the accident , most of them prisoners, and more than 150 were injured. The dead were buried near the accident site on November 23 and 24, 1937. 31 of the accident victims could previously be identified individually. The relatives were not informed of this, however, and they did not find out about their fate until decades later. An examination of the graves after the end of the Franco dictatorship revealed that they contained 56 dead.
