In the railway accident in Bihta on July 16, 1937 , an express train derailed near Bihta , 25 km from Patna , Bihar , India . 119 people died.

Starting position

The Punjab Mail , train number 6, of the East Indian Railway was en route from Delhi to Howrah / Calcutta . The last stop was Arrah , the next stop was supposed to be Danapore Cantonment .

The train from a pulled Atlantic - steam locomotive of series AP. It was followed by nine cars . Heavy monsoons had preceded the trip.

the accident

The train derailed at a speed of about 100 km / h at around 1:20 a.m. in Bihta. The locomotive and the first seven wagons were thrown down a dam. The first two cars were buried and crushed by the following two. Some of the cars caught fire.

The cause of the accident could never be clearly clarified because the accident had damaged the superstructure so badly that all traces were obliterated. The suspicion that the leading locomotive was an XB series, which was known to run extremely restlessly at higher speeds, has been refuted. It is possible that the superstructure was washed away by the rain or that the track was previously damaged by another train. But an attack was also considered.

consequences

119 people died and 180 were injured.
