Échets station around 1900

In the railway accident at Les Échets on September 10, 1921, a train derailed in the station of Les Échets , now a district of Miribel (Ain) , due to excessive speed. 38 people died.

Starting position

The station is on the Lyon-Saint-Clair-Bourg-en-Bresse railway, operated by PLM at the time. The line was originally double-tracked . During the First World War , the second track was dismantled so that it could be used elsewhere. The crossing points built in as an aid in the stations were only designed for driving at 20 km / h. It was only in August 1921 that permission had been given to restore the original condition. Construction work had not yet started.

the accident

An express train, on the way from Strasbourg to Lyon and partly made up of older wagons still fitted with a wooden structure, entered the siding at the train station in Les Échets at excessive speed. Three of the wagons with wooden superstructures derailed and were smashed in the process.
