Lockett Railway Accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Lockett railway accident on September 27, 1923, a bridge near Lockett , Wyoming , USA , collapsed and swept away a train that was driving it. 31 people died.

Starting position

The bridge spanned Cole Creek between Casper and Glenrock just before it flows into the North Platte River . It served a route on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad . An unusually large amount of rain had fallen in the days before the accident . Therefore the bridge was inspected and found to be in order an hour before the accident happened.

the accident

A sandbar lying across Cole Creek caused the water to back up. When it got too big, the barrier broke and the sand and the water masses hit the bridge just as the train crossed it. The locomotive and the train's first five carriages washed up in the North Platte River , where they were almost entirely buried in the sand.

consequences

31 people died, 3 were also injured.
