from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Salem rail accident was a head-on collision between two trains on July 20, 1907 near Salem , Michigan , USA , in which 30 people died.

Starting position

The train protection was carried out on the single-track line of the Pere Marquette Railway (PM) by giving the locomotive crew handwritten travel commands . The regulation said that the employees on the locomotive had to read this command to each other. The personnel of a freight train had received such a driving order. He was met by a special train on the same route that railway workers were taking on their annual company outing from Ionia to Detroit .

the accident

The command for the freight train was indistinctly written and the train driver did not read it out loud. He confused two train stations, assumed incorrect travel times and an incorrect crossing station . The place where the two trains met was also in a deep cut in the terrain . 30 people died in the collision.
