Sudbury Railway Accident

In the Sudbury railway accident on January 21, 1910, a derailed train crashed into a river. 37 people died.

The “Soo Express” was on its way from Montreal to Minneapolis . To do this, he had to cross the Spanish River on a bridge 77 km west of Sudbury , near the settlement of Nairn in Middlesex County , Ontario . The train derailed immediately in front of the bridge. Two wagons sank in the river nine meters deep here, another was smashed at the bridge's abutment . Before one of the cars sank in the river, a conductor managed to punch a hole in the side wall with an ax and saved seven people from it. For this he received the Albert Medal .
