The Spanish River is a river that flows through the Algoma District , the Sudbury District and Greater Sudbury in northeastern Ontario , Canada .

It has a length of 338 km. The river originates in Ember Lake . It initially flows through the lakes Bragh Lake , Frechette Lake , Spanish Lake , Ramsey Lake and Biscotasi Lake in an easterly direction. It then turns to the southeast and takes the East Spanish River from the left. The Spanish River now flows mainly in a southerly direction and flows into the North Channel east of the Georgsbucht and thus into the Huron Sea at Spanish .

The river flows almost exclusively within the Sudbury District , with the exception of short passages: in the urban area of Greater Sudbury near the communities of High Falls and Turbine , and at its mouth, which is in the Algoma District .

Tributaries are Pogamasing Creek, Mogo Creek, Agnes River , River aux Sables , Vermilion River, and Wakonassin River .

The river name and the place names of Espanola and Spanish are said to come from French explorers and Jesuit priests who met Ojibwe in this area , who could speak Spanish .

The river is mainly used by canoe tourists. Its upper course lies in the Spanish River Provincial Park . There are four dams along the course of the river that are used to generate electricity: One of them, known as Big Eddy , above High Falls is Lake Agnew ; High Falls Dam - about 1 km below the Big Eddy Dam; Nairn Falls Dam - about 12 km below High Falls; another at the Domtar Mill in Espanola.
