Iron lines (medicine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In medicine , iron lines are characteristic discoloration of the cornea of the eye caused by iron deposits .

Any irregularity in the area of the corneal surface leads to the tear film being distributed unevenly from the lid over the corneal surface. Iron can be deposited in a characteristic way at these points in the corneal epithelium. The most common iron lines that become visible as a result are the physiological iron deposition at the point where the eyelid closes ( Hudson-Stähli line ), the Stocker line in pterygium , the Ferry line in filter pads after glaucoma surgery and the Fleischer ring in keratoconus . Iron lines are also after surgical interventions, e.g. B. in radial keratotomy , photorefractive keratectomy , keratoplasty and corneal scars.
