Ice hockey has been played at the New Zealand Winter Games since the Games first played in 2009. The first games took place in Dunedin , as there wasno suitable ice rinkin the actual venue Queenstown . In 2013 and 2015, the number of sports at the Winter Games was reduced and ice hockey was also removed from the program. Ice hockey has been part of the program of the annual games since 2017. As part of the Winter Games, the Trans-Tasman Challenge will be held against neighboring Australia (named after the Tasman Sea between New Zealand and Australia).
