The ice rink on Jafféstraße was a multifunctional hall in which ice hockey was primarily played. When it opened on October 28, 1973, it was considered the most modern of its kind in Germany. After years of discussions in the Berlin Senate , the ice rink was demolished in April / May 2001 in the course of the southern expansion of the exhibition center .

location

The ice rink was located in the immediate vicinity of the Deutschlandhalle and was therefore part of the spacious exhibition center.

history

The construction of the ice rink in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf had become necessary because the resident Berlin ice-skating club no longer wanted to host its games in the Wedding ice rink and the previous venue, the Sports Palace , no longer met modern requirements and was finally demolished in November 1973. It was built in a record time of ten months and ten days by the Dutch company Pellikaan and the opening game was played by the BSchC against the Tilburg Trappers from Holland, whose president was the builder of the hall. In addition to the good visibility, the players also praised the lighting and the ice.

“It won't be the good old sports palace. There is simply a lack of stink "

- OE Hasse : on the opening day

use

In addition to its main use as an ice hockey rink, the hall also served as a competitive sports training facility for the State Sports Association and as a public artificial ice rink. Thanks to an insertable wooden panel floor, it was also possible to use it for other sports or concerts. Numerous rock and pop concerts took place there. On July 7, 1980 Led Zeppelin gave the concert in the ice rink, which was to become the last Led Zeppelin concert for 27 years. The Austrian singer Falco recorded a concert in the hall on October 27, 1986 as part of his "Emotional" world tour, which was published after his death under the title Live Forever .

After the BSchC merged with the BFC Preussen in 1983 to form the BSC Preussen , ice hockey Bundesliga games continued to take place there. With the successor clubs Preussen “Devils” Berlin and Berlin Capitals , there were numerous Bundesliga and DEL games in the period that followed, with a high number of spectators - especially in inner-city comparisons with the Eisbären Berlin  - and the hall “sold out” several times “Reported.

demolition

Despite its relatively young age and although like other arenas of those years of construction it had no particular luxury, but also no particular defects, the hall of the neighboring Messe Berlin stood in the way and was to be demolished in favor of a new entrance area. The Berlin Senate and the trade fair agreed to demolish the ice rink in 2001 and relocate its use to the nearby Deutschlandhalle . This was also torn down in 2011 in favor of the fair; In 2012, the Charlottenburg ice rink was opened near Glockenturmstrasse to replace it .
