Quarry pond |
The Eixer Lake is a quarry pond in the district Eixe in Peine , Lower Saxony .
It is a former gravel pond, which was developed into a recreational area after gravel mining ended and opened for swimming. The lake was originally created in 1949 in order to obtain material for backfilling underground cavities in the Peine mine , which were created in the course of iron ore mining (→ old man ). The sand extracted by wet mining with a suction excavator was transported to the mine site by a connecting railway. From a shaft bunker , the sand in the flushing basin was mixed with circulating water and flushed through pipes into the abandoned excavation cavities.
The bathing lake is home to a number of leisure facilities (including a volleyball field and a covered barbecue area) and also has a DLRG guard station. Since 1997 the bathing water quality corresponds to the highest rating level.
