Ove Ekebjærg

Ove Ekebjærg actually Ove Ekebjærg Rasmussen (born March 3, 1934 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish chess player . He became European champion in 1976 and vice world champion in correspondence chess in 1999 .

Correspondence chess

In 1960 Ekebjærg started correspondence chess. He quickly qualified for participation in the European Championship. In 1967 he reached 4th place at the 2nd European Championships. At the 3rd European Championships in 1972, he reached a shared third place. Finally, in 1976, he won the 10th European Championship. For this, the World Correspondence Chess Federation ( ICCF) awarded him the title of International Correspondence Chess Master .

Ekebjærg also took part in the finals of the World Correspondence Chess Championship several times. He reached 7th place at the 9th World Cup in 1977/83 and 12th place at the 16th World Cup in 1999/2004. His greatest success was the runner-up in the 14th World Cup in 1994/99, half a point behind the Estonian Tõnu Õim . Ekebjærg came second in the "Julius Nielsen Memorial" 1985/90; the winner was Jonathan Penrose . In 1987 he became a grandmaster .

Tournament chess

Ekebjærg is also a strong player on the board. In Denmark he is in the top category Landshold classes . In 1967 he took part in the final of the Danish championship, but finished last.

Ekebjærg often successfully chooses the irregular opening 1. Nc3 with White, even against the strongest opponents .

Private

Ekebjærg works at Handelsbank Copenhagen as an account manager. He lost his family name Rasmussen a long time ago.
