Ectropioning
Ectropioning is an ophthalmological examination of the inside of the eyelid . The upper or lower eyelid is turned inside out. A cotton swab or glass stick around which the lid is folded serves as an aid. A distinction is made between simple ectropioning to assess the eyelid conjunctiva ( conjunctiva palpebrarum ) and double ectropioning to inspect the folds further back ( fornix conjunctivae ). In the latter procedure, a so-called Desmarres eyelid holder (after the French ophthalmologist Louis-Auguste Desmarres ) can be used as an aid.
Ectropioning is an important diagnostic procedure when inspecting the eyelids and is used to identify and remove foreign bodies , as well as to assess melanomas , carcinomas or other diseases that cannot be recognized or adequately examined when looking at the eyelids.
