The Ekwele (plural Bipkwele , ISO-4217 code GQE) is a historical currency unit of Equatorial Guinea .

On July 7, 1975, the Ekwele replaced the Equatorial Guinea peseta in a ratio of 1: 1, and the previous exchange rate parity with the Spanish peseta was abolished. When the new currency unit was introduced, the spelling Ekuele (plural also Ekuele ) was chosen, which was changed to Ekwele in 1979. There are coins of 1, 5 and 10 Ekuele, as well as banknotes of 25, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Ekuele with the image of the President Francisco Macías Nguema on the obverse and various scenes typical of the country on the reverse.

After Nguema's fall, new banknotes were issued without his portrait. They are dated August 3, 1979 (the day of the coup) and have the changed currency information Ekwele. The series comprised the values of 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 Bipkwele. In 1980 a new coin series of 1, 5, 25 and 50 bipkwels followed. In addition, on October 21, 1980, old 100 and 500 Peseta banknotes were changed to 1000 and 5000 Bipkwele banknotes by stamping them.

On January 1, 1985, Equatorial Guinea was the first country that did not belong to the former French colonial empire to introduce the CFA franc . The exchange rate was 1 CFA Franc for 4 Bipkwele.
