Elías García Martínez
Elías García Martínez (born July 20, 1858 in Requena , Valencia , † August 1, 1934 in Utiel ) was a Spanish painter .
Life
Elías García Martínez began his artistic career in his native Requena. He studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia and Barcelona . He later moved to Zaragoza , where he married Juliana Condoy Tello. In 1894 he became an assistant professor at the Escuela Provincial de Bellas Artes de Zaragoza . There Martínez taught ornamental drawing and portraiture until his retirement in 1929. He also gave courses as a professor at the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Zaragoza .
Ecce Homo
In the summer of 2012 a work by Martínez, an image of Christ, called Ecce homo , was disfigured in the village of Borja near Saragossa by the pensioner Cecilia Giménez, who had tried to restore the work. This caused a worldwide media coverage.
