El Faro ( German  Der Leuchtturm ) is the largest Internet newspaper in El Salvador , it is considered the first online newspaper in all of Latin America that appears without a print edition .

history

El Faro was founded on April 25, 1998 by the journalist Carlos Dada, of Salvadoran and Greek origin, and the businessman Jorge Simán. The first publication was on May 14, 1998. The editions appear daily in Spanish and are divided into the following sections:

El Faro also operates a radio station that broadcasts on the 105.3 MHz FM frequency .

editorial staff

The newspaper has an independent editorial team and promotes critical analysis and reporting of the national and Central American situation.

Ricardo Vaquerano is the editor-in-chief . Editors are: Carlos Martínez, Sergio Arauz, Óscar Martínez, José Luis Sanz, Elmer Menjívar, Roberto Valencia, Daniel Valencia, Gabriel Labrador, Efren Lemus, Patricia Carías, Óscar Luna and María Luz Nóchez. The photo editing is led by Mauro Arias and José Carlos Reyes. Otto Meza is responsible for the caricatures .

Awards

  • In 2011 Carlos Dada received the María Moors-Cabot Award (awarded since 1946) from the Universidad de Columbia .
  • In 2012 Carlos Dada was awarded the WOLA Prize. The award ceremony took place on September 19, 2012 at the French Embassy in Washington, DC .
